The publication of the eponymous exhibition includes extensive documentation of each of the twelve projects that were part of the exhibition “The Woods That see and hear” (May-July 2010) and is introduced by an introductory essay by guest curator Sarah Farrar.
The book contains five additional scripts specially written for this publication: three interviews artist Eve Armstrong did with people closely connected to the vicinity of the exhibition, an essay by Koen Kleijn result of the ongoing project ‘All Alone Among the Stars “(2007), Marjolijn Dijkman, Nathalie Hartjes wrote a story that describes relationship between man and nature from the perspective of two former lovers.

dertien hectare looks back at a successful edition of its biennial exhibition.  ‘The woods that see and hear’, developed by New Zealand-born curator Sarah Farrar, addressed issues of ecology and the changing landscape through projects by national and international artists. The exhibition received over 3200 visitors, with strong attendance of the education programme for primary and secondary schools. Currently dertien hectare is finalising the publication ‘The woods that see and hear’ which will be presented at the end of August 2010. More information about the book launch will follow on this website.

For one long summer night ‘The woods that see and hear’ exhibition will be open late for visitors to experience the works at dusk and at night-time. In addition to the unique experience of viewing the artworks by lamplight, there will also be some special events, guided tours of the exhibition and a screening of short films as part of local Den Bosch artist Maureen Prins’ CosyMo’s SOLAR CINEMA. It will also be possible to camp overnight at dertien hectare in your own tent. Please bring your own torch!

To attend ‘Midsummer night´s dream’ reservations are necessary .

Costs: € 10 for a regular ticket. €15 for a ticket including camping place and breakfast (bring your own tent).

Free shuttle bus service between the CBK ’s Hertogenbosch to dertien hectare in Heeswijk. The bus leaves at 7.00 pm at the CBK and returns from dertien hectare to the CBK at  12.00 am.

During one of the longest days of the year dertien hectare organises a midsummer celebration, in conjunction with the exhibition ‘The woods that see and hear’. Throughout the evening visitors can experience the artworks in twilight and in the dark, and are treated to several special events.

CosyMo’s SOLAR CINEMA is a project by artist Maureen Prins. In addition to her work as an artist and filmmaker, Prins develops compilations of short films that she presents as CosyMo’s SOLAR CINEMA, using a screen powered by solar energy. For Midsummer night’s dream Prins launches ‘Go Greener Shorts’, a new programme of short films with an environmental focus.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the exhibition with some elements especially added for this night. In Eduardo Abaroa’s video work ‘Extraction of the stone of madness’, the artist uses found objects and his electric guitar to converse with nature and the dertien hectare site. For Midsummer night’s dream he continues this dialogue with a new composition that will emanate from within the woods. Elsewhere on the terrain Tea Makipää’s car graveyard, an ode to the past era of gas guzzlers entitled ‘Petrol Engine Memorial Park’, will come back to life as the cars bring forth a roaring and boisterous swansong.

The work ‘Saint John’ by Heather and Ivan Morison is an architectural structure, referencing the Polish midsummer celebration (Noc Świętojańska or St.John’s Night) and inspired by local and traditional architectural practices. During their research the artists discovered the traditional use of ox blood to protect wood against weathering. As part of the Midsummer night’s dream event a barbecue will be served with ox sausages made by a local artisan sausage maker. In the café, designed by Overtreders W, homemade pumpkin soup will be served with herbs of your own choice (an integral part of Overtreders W’s design), as well as organic bread with fine mustard and mayonnaise and a fresh salad.

There are two opportunities to join a tour on this evening (one in English and one in Dutch). There will also be an ongoing DJ set by Analogic Sound Project (Pierre Estourgie) bringing a mix of electro, techno and minimal. The programme has no fixed end time and it is possible to camp overnight in your own tent on the exhibition grounds.

Recommended:  Warm clothing, gumboots, torchlight.

The exhibition ‘The woods that see and hear‘ takes place at two locations; at dertien hectare in Heeswijk (municipality of Bernheze, 15 km from ´s-Hertogenbosch) and at the CBK ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

The CBK (Boschveldweg 471, ’s-Hertogenbosch, entrance on the Boschdijkstraat) is a short 10 minute walk from Den Bosch Central Station.

Each weekend a shuttle bus service operates between the two locations. The bus will make its first departure from the CBK  at 1.30 pm, and from then on continuously rides back and forth between the exhibition venues. You can find out about the location of the bus at the information desks. Maximum waiting time for the shuttles services is estimated at half an hour. The last service will return from dertien hectare to ´s-Hertogenbosch at 6.00 pm.
